The island, formerly Ship Island when connected to its eastern neighbor, is anchored by Fort Massachusetts. Like the other islands in Mississippi, West Ship is an excellent place to spend an afternoon swimming, picnicking, or wildlife viewing. Additionally, there are several amenities available on West Ship Island not found on the other islands.

There is no entrance fee for Mississippi Areas of the national seashore.
The facilities and services on West Ship Island are only open Mid-March through October. There are lifeguards on duty during the summer months. Pack-It-In, Pack-It-Out principles are practiced on the islands.
