Gulf Breeze, Fla. – National Park Service officials will reopen the Perdido Key Area on Friday, October 13, at 5:00 am. The area joins the Fort Barrancas, Naval Live Oaks, and Okaloosa Areas in returning to normal operations following Hurricane Nate. Restrooms and pavilions will be open, and entrance fees will be required for visitors to the area.
All areas of the national seashore had been closed Friday, October 6, ahead of Hurricane Nate making landfall on the Gulf Coast. The Johnson Beach swim beach was reopened at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, October 10. Johnson Beach Road beyond the swim beach remained closed at that time so road crews could clear sand and debris washed across the road by the storm.
Fort Pickens and Santa Rosa Areas remain closed to all visitors (pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles). In Mississippi, the park’s Davis Bayou Area will return to normal operations on Friday morning. The Mississippi barrier islands managed by the National Park Service remain closed.
A full list of closures and impacts can be found at www.nps.gov/guis/learn/news.htm. Park status updates will be posted online at www.nps.gov/GulfIslands, www.Facebook.com/GulfIslandsNPS, and www.Twitter.com/GulfIslandsNPS.
