Before the N.P.S. was established in 1916, troops of the U.S. Army patrolled and protected some of the iconic parks in the West, like Sequoia with its mammoth Redwood trees. Park rangers wear the "flat hat" in tribute to the army campaign hat that they wore with its "Montana Peak" crown and broad brim.
