Grand Canyon, Ariz. -Grand Canyon National Park rangers will be setting up sobriety safety checkpoints, over the Memorial Day weekend, in an effort to assure the safety of park visitors and residents.

Statewide, over 600 people were arrested for DUI over the Memorial Day weekend last year. Explains Grand Canyon Acting Chief Ranger Mike McGinnis: "About one-third of Arizona's traffic fatalities each year occur in alcohol related accidents. Our goal is for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend, and that includes ensuring that they aren't involved in an alcohol related accident."

Checkpoint dates and locations will be randomly selected and will not be announced in advance.

The National Park Service would like to remind everyone that the best way to enjoy the holiday weekend is safely. Please, drink responsibly; and if you do drink, don't drive.
