Grand Canyon, Ariz. -Grand Canyon National Park rangers will be implementing enhanced patrols, including random safety and sobriety checkpoints, during Fourth of July week in an effort to assure the safety of park visitors and residents.

"During the 2012 Memorial Day weekend, enhanced patrols helped to keep drivers under the influence of both alcohol and controlled substances off of park roadways. In addition to the arrests made, rangers also cited drivers for equipment violations, choosing not to wear a seatbelt, lack of insurance and lack of registration," said Grand Canyon's Acting Chief Ranger Mike McGinnis. "With the enhanced patrols and checkpoints, we hope to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July in Grand Canyon National Park."

Checkpoint dates and locations will be randomly selected and will not be announced in advance.

The National Park Service would like to remind everyone that the best way to enjoy the Fourth of July is safely. Please, drink responsibly; and if you do drink, don't drive.
