Grand Canyon, Ariz. -- Grand Canyon National Park's North and South Rim Artist-in-Residence (AiR) programs are pleased to announce the artists selected for the October 2010 – September 2011 season. The AiR program offers professional artists the opportunity to spend three weeks on either the North or South Rim of the Grand Canyon in housing provided by the National Park Service. Those three weeks are an opportunity for artists to enjoy quality uninterrupted time, pursuing their art while creating works that generate understanding and dialogue about the need to preserve the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon's AiR program welcomes not only artists who work in the time-honored tradition of representational landscape photography and painting, but also encourages involvement of artists working in new mediums and whose art is in direct advocacy of the Park's environmental, cultural and historical issues and concerns. While in-residence, the selected South Rim artists have the opportunity to live in the historic upstairs of Verkamp's Visitor Center and Museum Store, perched on the rim to the east of the El Tovar hotel. The South Rim AiR program is honored to be hosting the following artists for the 2010 - 2011 season: October 2010 - Siri Beckman from Stonington, Maine; printmaking November 2010 – collaborative couple Angela Ragusa and William James Woolf from Santu Lussurgiu, Italy; writing/illustration and film/videography December 2010 – Rachel Wilson from January 2011 – Pamela Petro from February 2011 – Rhonda Rider from March 2011 – Williamson Tapia from April 2011 – Elizabeth Brown from Early May 2011 – Shawn Skabelund from Late May – early June 2011 – Aubrey Atwater from Foster, Rhode Island; folk music/dance Mid June – early July 2011 – Liz Roth from Mid to late July 2011 – Iris Cushing from August 2011 – collaborative couple Andrea Polli and Chuck Varga from September 2011 – Antony Lyons from North Rim artists live in a quaint cabin nestled in the serene mixed conifer forest. The cabin, which overlooks While the specific dates for the North Rim Artists-in-Residence will be set closer to the seasonal opening of the North Rim in 2010, the artists have already been selected. They are: Mark McGinnis from Boise, Idaho; acrylic painting Ruane Miller from Weehawken, New Jersey; painting: gouache and digital photography Thea Gavin from Orange, California; writing/poetry Sharin Smelser from Berkeley, California; quiltwork photography Tony Amadore from Orlando, Florida; musician-singer/songwriter In exchange for the adventure of living and working at the Grand Canyon, Artists-in-Residence will be expected to provide three public outreach programs, presentations or performances of their choosing. In addition to these free programs, each artist will also donate to the park one work that was inspired by his or her residency here. The programs and the works produced by the artists are intended to inspire park visitors to become active participants in preservation and environmental and cultural advocacy.
