We provide Sign Language Interpreters for our park visitors. To request a Sign Language Interpreter we request at least two weeks advanced notice in order to guarantee that an interpreter will be available.
If you are visiting Alcatraz Island we have several accommodations on-site for visitors who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
For visitors who communicate in American Sign Language, the safety video which plays on the ferry, feature embedded American Sign Language narration. Please direct your attention to the television screens on the boat. Once on the island, the welcome video and Indian Occupation videos both feature open captions. The Cell House Audio Tour, which is included in your ticket, is available in American Sign Language. Please indicate to a Cell House staff member that you need the American Sign Language version of the tour and they will provide you with a hand held device featuring a video display of ASL interpreters narrating the tour. A written script of the Cell House Tour is also available.
If you are in need of Assistive Listening Devices, they can be requested at the Alcatraz Cruises Ticket Booth at Alcatraz Landing on Pier 33. The Assisted Listening Device connects to the ferry safety video, park welcome video and the Indian Occupation video. It can also be used on Ranger and docent guided programs.
