Lands End lookout

Lands End
The National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy are undertook the next set of improvements to be done at Lands End. The improvements included the construction of a new visitor facility (to be called the Lands End Lookout), enhancements to the USS San Francisco Memorial parking area, and continued habitat and cultural resource restoration. These, together with the many improvements already completed in this historic district, continued the area's transformation to the vision approved in the Sutro Historic District Comprehensive Design Environmental Assessment.

Lands End Lookout
The new visitor facility at Lands End is located adjacent to Pt. Lobos Avenue above the Sutro Baths. It contains informational displays describing the area's rich cultural and natural history and allows locals and visitors to enjoy an indoor space that will complement the dramatic coastal environment.

On July 21, 2010 the National Park Service and Parks Conservancy hosted a community meeting to gather input for the design of the Lookout facility. Participants discussed three questions within small groups. They were:

- What does Lands End mean to you?
- How do you use Lands End?
- What functions do you see at the Lands End Lookout?

To review a brief summary of the participants' responses, see the documents section below.

The next meeting to learn more about the Lookout facility and to review and comment on the draft design schematics was:

Tuesday, September 28, 2010
6:00 p.m. -7:30 p.m. at the Cliff House in San Francisco
RSVP was required.

USS San Francisco Memorial Parking Area Project
Improvements are currently underway to the parking area and overlook at the end of El Camino del Mar, above the Coastal Trail. Improvements include re-surfacing and native plantings.

The USS San Francisco Memorial parking area will be closed August – December 2010 during construction. The lower Lands End parking lot and Coastal Trail will remain open. For a flyer and closure map, please click on the "Document List" link on the left.

This plan is a conscious effort to address both natural and cultural resources, because at this site the physical attributes and biotic systems of the larger landscape contribute to its historical significance.
