Lower Redwood Creek Floodplain and Salmonid Habitat Restoration - Banducci Site

The National Park Service (NPS) has completed the environmental review process for the Lower Redwood Creek Floodplain and Salmonid Habitat Restoration project at the Banducci Site in Marin County, CA, near Muir Beach.

The NPS has selected Alternative 1 for implementation, which will restore natural creek processes and enhance habitat for federally listed salmonid species.

An environmental assessment (EA) was completed and distributed for public review in March-April 2007. Through environmental analysis and interagency review, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) has determined that the Selected Alternative will not significantly affect the environment and has issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the project.

As a result of public and agency comment, some changes were made to the project. The changes include: 1) elimination of actions in the Old Ballfield; 2) elimination of one log jam in the Upper Alley; 3) removal of non-native eucalyptus trees; 4) elimination of channel widening in the Upper Alley; and 5) an increase in the volume of material to be re-used for other projects. These changes are described in more detail in the FONSI and Errata and do not increase the degree of adverse impact analyzed in the EA.

The FONSI, EA and Errata (which is a technical attachment to the EA) comprise the environmental impact analysis for this project. Construction began in September 2007.

The goals of the project are to:

  • enhance summer rearing and winter refugia habitat for federally threatened coho salmon and federally threatened steelhead
  • restore channel and floodplain connectivity, enhance nesting habitat for songbirds
  • create sustainable breeding habitat for the federally threatened California Red-Legged Frog
  • restore tributary connections to the creek corridor
  • create self-sustaining conditions that minimize the need for maintenance.
