This collection also known as the Presidio Project Records is a significant body of material documenting the transformation of the Presidio from a U.S. Army post to a national park. The collection is noteworthy in demonstrating the functions and activities that helped redefine the nature of the urban national park and its management system. It demonstrates the evolution of the public-private partnership as envisioned by the NPS; the legislation and establishment of a public benefit corporation; and the subsequent development of the Presidio Trust enterprise. The Presidio proved to be a model for sustainability of natural and cultural resources, as well as park management.
The Park Archives and Records Center began surveying, arranging and describing the more than 500 linear feet of records in 2012. As of October 2013, the archivist and project assistants have completed work on the records pertaining to organization of the transition teams and their critical tasks and work plans for the transition; the Department of the Interior and the NPS negotiations with the Department of Defense and the U.S. Army; the development of an amendment to the General Management Plan, including the public's involvement in numerous planning workshops; and the establishment of an implementation strategy to develop programming and concessions at the Presidio.
Over the next year the largest series of documents will be incorporated into the collection. These will contain information on the management of the Presidio Project Office and its focus on natural and cultural resources, buildings rehabilitation, environmental remediation, infrastructure, energy, and property management.
Upon completion of the processing project, the Presidio of San Francisco Transition and Development Records will be accessible via a finding aid to the collection and available for research during PARC reference hours or by appointment.
