Rangers closed Wahweap Beach after a visitor reported a diesel fuel spill in the water around 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon. Rangers are investigating a fuel spill that originated from a moored boat. The spill is reported to be a bright neon substance. The spill extends an estimated 1,000 yards between Wahweap Beach and Wahweap Boat Rentals.

Containment and cleanup efforts are being coordinated by the National Park Service, the Bureau of Reclamation, and Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas. Booms and pads designed to absorb petroleum products are being used to clean the water and the shoreline. Wahweap Beach will remain temporarily closed until NPS officials determine that conditions are safe for visitors.

"Visitor safety is our top priority," said Acting Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Lindy Mihata. "Officials have been working since notification of the spill to clean the beach and reopen it to visitors as soon as possible."
