Rangers have reopened most of Wahweap Beach. The beach has been closed since yesterday afternoon due to a fuel spill originating from a moored boat in the buoy field. Officials have been working since notification of the spill to clean the beach and restore safe conditions for visitors. An area of shoreline that has not yet been cleaned remains closed and is contained by booms.
Booms were used to contain fuel leaking from the boat, and the boat is being removed from the lake. Pads designed to absorb petroleum products were used to clean the water and the shoreline.Lake waters have been receding throughout the day, and NPS employees hauled fuel-contaminated sand from the beach for disposal. As the lake continues to recede, any additional fuel-contaminated sand that is exposed will be removed.
