Volunteers Remove Nearly One Ton of Trash from Lake Powell

During the first annual Love Your Lake Community Cleanup on Saturday March 18, 71 volunteers and 29 employees removed 1,860 pounds of trash from Lake Powell's shoreline. The largest item was a mattress removed from Lone Rock Beach.  

"I would like to thank the Page community, our partners and visitors for cleaning up Lake Powell and helping the park look its birthday best for the 2016 Centennial Season," said Acting Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Billy Shott. 

The Love Your Lake Community Cleanup, which lasted from9 am. to2 p.m., was supported by the Glen Canyon Natural History Association (NHA). "Our goal is to make this cleanup an annual event," said NHA Executive Director Karen Dallett. "Congratulations to our raffle winners!" Participants turned in trash bags for raffle tickets. Prizes were donated by Antelope Point Marina, Blair's Trading Post, Boston's True Value, Colorado River Discovery, Gary Ladd, Hidden Canyon Kayak, Pepper's Restaurant, RD's Drive-In, and Stix Bait,

Prizes included half-day rafting trips on the Colorado River, half-day kayak trips, boat tours to Antelope Canyon, framed prints, restaurant gift certificates, and bait bundles.

The Love Your Lake Community Cleanup launched a year-long community and partner collaboration to improve resource conditions at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area during the National Park Service Centennial.
