Superintendent Todd Brindle announced today that beginning January 3, 2012, the speed limit on Lakeshore Drive will change from 55 mph to 45 mph. Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 4.21(a)(3) sets the maximum speed limits for park roads at 45 mph, unless it is unreasonable, unsafe, or inconsistent with park purposes. After a review of the uses on Lakeshore Drive, the 45 mph designation is appropriate considering the many types of users, from bicyclists to commercial houseboat haulers, and makes the maximum speed limit consistent with all other roads within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The decrease is only expected to change the overall destination times for motorists by less than two minutes, given the short distance of the road. Motorists are reminded that 36 CFR 4.21(c) prohibits operating a vehicle at a speed in excess of the posted limit and operators may be cited and receive monetary fines for violations.
