On April 14, 2016, just before 7 p.m., National Park Service Glen Canyon Dispatch received an emergency call from a boat just outside Wahweap Marina reporting that a 26 year-old man fell overboard and did not resurface. The incident occurred in the Kane County portion of Wahweap Bay in Lake Powell.

Initial search efforts were conducted by the National Park Service, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Classic Life Guard Aviation. The search continued into the night and the following day with temporary interruptions due to hazardous weather conditions. Due to water depths averaging 127 feet in the search area, Wasatch County Utah Sheriff’s Office and Utah Highway Patrol will join the search effort on April 16, and use side-scan sonar to search the area. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will provide additional support.

A joint investigation is being conducted by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Utah State Parks and the National Park Service.
