Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is hosting a volunteer work day on September 18 to celebrate National Public Lands Day. NPLD is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands. In 2009, 150,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, planted trees and restored our water resources.

"Officially NPLD is being celebrated on Saturday, September 25, but locally that weekend is already filled with many other events, so we decided to celebrate a bit early," said event coordinator Joan Mayer. "We are hoping for a good turnout of enthusiastic, hard-working and fun-loving volunteers."

Interested volunteers should call Joan Mayer at 928-608-6353 to register. Sign up on September 18 will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the main Wahweap Marina launch ramp. The work project to remove exotic Ravenna grass and restore the natural habitat will last until noon. Volunteers should dress appropriately with sturdy closed toe shoes, long sleeve shirts and long pants. Please come prepared to be outdoors for several hours and be sure to bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat. Tools and gloves will be provided, along with water to refill your bottles.

NPLD inspires a new generation of volunteers committed to service on public lands. The event also encourages volunteers to explore and enjoy America's natural wonders through outdoor recreation. In honor of NPLD, September 25 has been established as a fee free day in national parks and other public lands across the country. Volunteers participating in the September 18 local work project will also receive a coupon for a free entrance to any national park or public lands site.
