Helicopter-assisted Data Collection
Between Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry
Page, AZ – A single helicopter will be flying at about 600 feet above the ground surface in the fifteen miles between Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry for 1 day during the week of July 7, 2013. The exact date depends on local weather conditions. During this time, visitors on the river and the rim may see or hear the helicopter traveling up and down the river corridor.
The U.S. Geological Survey’s Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC) will conduct the overflight mission as a part of the Glen Canyon Adaptive Management Program.
Aerial images and topographic data will be collected to help monitor the effect of Glen Canyon Dam on downstream resources. Black and white panels (approximately 5 x 5 feet) which allow the data to be accurately positioned and adjusted, may be seen on the ground during this time. If you encounter any of the panels, please leave them undisturbed.
