Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced free admission to all National Park Service sites, including Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, from April 17 - 25. "We are rolling out the red carpet and inviting everyone to visit a national park and help celebrate National Park Week", he said.
April 24 also is National Junior Ranger Day, with special events planned for children at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Junior Rangers are invited to participate in a fun and creative activity to learn about Native American symbols and historical inscriptions. They will learn how to protect the remarkable cultural and natural features of Glen Canyon and all National Park Service sites, while earning a Junior Ranger badge and special certificate.
Rainbow Bridge centennial events are also continuing with special programs being offered throughout the week at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center. Ramson Lomatewama will be demonstrating Hopi basket weaving and katsina carving from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on April 17. He will return at 7:00 p.m. to share some of his poetry and provide some insights into Hopi life and culture. On April 21 from 9:30 -11:30 a.m., Jerry Lindsay will conduct a "Tips for Beginning Watercolor" workshop. The workshop is limited to 25 participants with advance registration required. Mark Squillace, Director of the Natural Resources Law Center at the University of Colorado School of Law, will present "The Antiquities Act" on April 23 at 7:00 p.m. The 1906 legislation has been used by many presidents to create national monuments throughout the country, including Rainbow Bridge. James Babbitt will conclude the week with a presentation, "Through Indian Country Along the Rainbow Trail in 1913: Theodore Roosevelt, Trading Posts and Rainbow Bridge", at 7:00 p.m. on April 24. Mr. Babbitt has edited an anthology of stories pertaining to historic travel to Rainbow Bridge. Please call 928-628-6404 for more information about these free programs.
In addition, park concessioners will be offering special discounts. Aramark Parks and Destinations will feature a special buy one ticket for Lake Powell’s Canyon Adventure or Rainbow Bridge Cruise and receive the second ticket free. Antelope Point Marina will be offering a 50% discount on power boat and kayak rentals.
National Park Week is an opportunity to engage families and communities in America’s Great Outdoors, reconnecting them with nature and creating opportunities for people to get outside, be active, and have fun.
