Superintendent Stan Austin today announced that Glen Canyon National Recreation Area will join 390 other national parks across American and offer three fee-free weekends this summer.
"We want to encourage everyone to visit Glen Canyon and Lake Powell this summer," Superintendent Austin said. "These weekends will provide an opportunity for our visitors to experience and enjoy this beautiful park."
The entrance fees will be waived on the following weekends:
June 20-21 (Father’s Day Weekend), July 18-19, and August 15-16, 2009
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that the National Park Service would host the fee-free weekends during a June 2 visit to Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. The intent is to encourage Americans to visit their national parks and to promote local and regional tourism.
"This is an opportunity for families to explore the splendor of Canyon Country and Lake Powell and Page as the Center of the Grand Circle," Austin said.
In addition to the fee waivers, many park partners are offering their own discounts to encourage travel and to support the National Park Service. Lake Powell Resorts and Marinas will offer a buy one - get one at 50% off for their full-day Rainbow Bridge Tours. Antelope Point Marina will offer free rides on a luxury houseboat and free single ride passes in their water park. And Colorado River Discovery is offering a free Bistro Bag lunch with their river trips. Check with the local concessionaires for details.
During these weekends, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area will waive the $15 fee for cars. The entrance stations will be open and staff will be available to provide maps, answer questions, and sell annual passes. The fee waiver does not include other fees such as for camping, boating, and river use fees.
