The Sprague Fire began with a lightning strike on August 10, 2017. Initial attack using helicopter water drops and the insertion of personnel failed to extinguish the blaze. In spite of continued additional efforts, an ember storm on August 31 consumed the Sperry Chalet Dormitory. Firefighters were successful in defending four other structures, including the historic dining hall.
Prior to the winter of 2017-2018 the ruins of the dormitory were stabilized to preserve the walls, while the future of the Sperry Chalet Complex is being decided. Several proposals are under review with most favoring restoring the Sperry Chalet to continue to provide a remote backcountry chalet experience.
