There are over 200 active GIS sites in the National Park Service. Here are some examples of how parks use GIS:

  • Coordinating and planning for development and landuse around parks
  • Studying flora and fauna and their habitats, including endangered species
  • Providing mapped visitor information about park points of interest
  • Plan park studies and management activities
  • Monitoring and measuring changes in vegetation and other natural resources over time
  • Search and rescue operations
  • Fire management including prescribed burns
  • Park facilities maintenance
  • Law enforcement
  • Visulization of historic landscapes
  • Mapping troop movements for Civil War battles
  • Studies and preservation of archeological sites
