Please join the National Park Service and the United States Military Academy as we commemorate the 196th Anniversary of the birth of Ulysses S. Grant.
The keynote address of the formal ceremony will be given by Pulitzer Prize winning biographer Ron Chernow, author of 2017’s Grant. Mr. Chernow will be available to sign books beginning at 12:15 pm.
During the commemoration, remarks will also be given by Brigadier General Steve Gilland, 77th Commandant, U.S. Corps of Cadets, U.S. Military Academy, West Point. In addition, the United States Military Academy Corps of Cadets and West Point Honor Guard will conduct a wreath laying ceremony and rifle salute.
Later in the day at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center, “Grant’s West Point,” a Ranger-led program examines the history of the Military Academy from it’s establishment 1802, through Grant’s graduation in 1843. The discussion will cover the establishment of the Academy, the application process of the time, and 1840’s cadet life at West Point.
