How will COVID-19 affect my visit

Gateway National Recreation Area is open, but there are some changes in operations- UPDATED December 6, 2021.

Hours of Operation

Sandy Hook: 6 am to 8 pm
Canarsie Pier and Jacob Riis Park: 6 am to 10 pm
All Other Jamaica Bay Sites: 6 am to 9 pm
Staten Island Units: 6 am to 9 pm


  1. All individuals over the age of two must wear masks in all NPS buildings regardless of location or vaccination status.
  2. All individuals over the age of two who are not yet fully vaccinated must wear masks in all outdoor areas, when others are present, where physical distancing (staying at least six feet apart) cannot reasonably be maintained.

Masks must cover the nose and mouth and fit snugly around the nose and chin with no large gaps around the sides of the face.

Masks not designed to be protective, masks with ventilation valves, and face shields do not meet the requirement.

Regardless of vaccination status, all individuals must comply with all orders regarding masks issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC prevention measures continue to apply to all travelers on public transit, regardless of vaccination status.

Masks remain required on all forms of public transit that operate within parks, including busses, trains, and boats/ferries, and in transportation hubs.

Visitor Centers

The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Hook visitor centers are open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Masks and social distancing are required. The Sandy Hook lighthouse, Ryan Visitor Center, and Fort Wadsworth Visitor Center remain closed.

Permit Updates:

The sale of 2021 Parking/After Hours Access for Fishing permits has endedfor the season.
The sale of 2021 Floyd Bennett Field Archery Permits has ended for the season.
Off-road permits sales have finished for the season. Off-road permits went on sale on April 1. Permits were issued between April 18 and April 24.

Sports League Permits (Fort Tilden, Frank Charles Park, Miller Field)

Sports leagues permits for low and medium impact sports are now available. Permits are only available through phone call, e-mail, or appointment.

Other Information

Basketball and tennis courts have reopened throughout the park Participants should continue to wear face coverings, follow social distancing protocols and avoid participating in high-contact games such as pick-up basketball.

Playgrounds are open throughout the park.

The Great Kills Boat Ramp has closed for the season

The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and the Sandy Hook Visitor Center are open on weekends from 10 am to 4 pm. Ranger Stations, the History House, Ryan Vistor Center and Fort Wadsworth Visitor Center are closed until further notice.
Limited on-site programs have resumed. Please visit the event calendar for more information. Reservations are required for most ranger programs at this time.
