How will COVID-19 affect my visit?

Gateway National Recreation Area is open, but there are some changes in operations- UPDATED July 13, 2020

Sandy Hook Fees and Season Passes:

Gateway has resumed collecting beach access fees at Sandy Hook. Season passes are also on sale at the entrance booth.

Riis Beach Fees and Season Passes:
Gateway has resumed collecting beach access fees at Riis Beach. Season passes are also being sold at the parking lot.

Picnic Areas:
Some designated picnic areas will reopen to the public. The Sandy Hook picnic area and picnic areas that require permits remain closed until further notice..

  • Sandy Hook Guardian Park (closed)
  • Miller Field Picnic Area (closed, requires a permit)
  • Fort Tilden Picnic Area (closed, requires a permit)
  • Canarsie Pier Picnic Area (open)
  • Jacob Riis Park Picnic Area (open)

Picnicking outside of designated picnic-barbecuing areas:

  • Barbecuing is not allowed.
  • Group picnics are not allowed.

Sports Fields and Courts:

Basketball and tennis courts have reopened. Participants should continue to wear face coverings, follow social distancing protocols and avoid participating in high-contact games such as pick-up basketball.

Archery:

Floyd Bennett Field Archery Range is closed until further notice.

Playgrounds:

Playgrounds are open throughout the park.

Campgrounds:

All Campground locations are closed for the summer of 2020.

Permits:

Permits for events and activities are not currently being issued.

Fishing Permits:

2019 Fishing/Parking Permits will be honored in 2020 season until further notice. (Only 2020 4x4 permits are allowed at Breezy Point).

Visitor Centers, Ranger Stations and History Houses are closed until further notice. On-site programs are suspended until further notice.

Sandy Hook Operations and Temporary Changes in Service:

Current Hours of Operation:

5 am to 9 pm
Collection of fees has resumed. The daily fee is $15 per day or $75 per season for most vehicles. For oversized vehicles (more than 20 feet), charge is $30 per day or $150 per season. Hours of collection are 7 am to 5 pm.

MUP:

The Multiple Use Path is accessible for recreational use, such as biking, walking, and running.


Picnics:

Guardian Park Picnic Area is currently closed.
Barbecuing and group picnicking are not permitted at this time anywhere in Sandy Hook.

Camping:

Sandy Hook Campground is closed for the 2020 season.

Bathrooms:

Bathroom facilities are open.

Food Service:

Food truck services are available.

Sports and group activities:

Group sports, group activities, and gatherings are not allowed.

Ferry Service:

Fishing Permits:

2019 fishing permits will be honored for the 2020 season until further notice.

Beaches:
Lifeguards are on duty from 10 am to 6 pm daily. Advisory signs noting which beaches are lifguarded will be at the entrance and updated daily.

Current Beach Rules prohibit:

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Tents or shelters (baby tents allowed, a baby or toddler must be present)
  • Barbecuing and open fires
  • Group gatherings including group picnics
  • Sports
  • Glass containers
  • Coolers that are more than 24 quarts in size per group.
  • Dogs and kites from March 15-September 15. (Leashed dogs are allowed on bay-side beaches)
  • Entering areas with symbolic fencing
  • Climbing on rocks/groins
  • Accessing the dunes (except at designated dune crossings)

Standard Operations:

  • Alcohol is prohibited except by permit.

  • Smoking is only permitted in designated parking areas.

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times, and are not allowed on the beach between March 15 and September 15.

  • Carry-in carry-out garbage policy is in effect.

Jamaica Bay Unit Operations and Temporary Changes in Service:

Current Hours of Operation:

9 pm closure for all locations.

Floyd Bennett Field:

Open to the public. The Archery Ranger and Ryan Visitor Center remain closed until further notice. Campgrounds are closed for the 2020 season. All ranger programs and events have been canceled.

Jacob Riis Park

Parking:

Parking is reduced to approximately 50% capacity.
Gateway is collecting fees at Riis Park. The daily fee is $10 per day or $65 per season for most vehicles. For oversized vehicles (more than 20 feet), charge is $20 per day or $135 per season. Hours of collection are 7 am to 5 pm.

Picnic Area:

The Jacob Riis Picnic Area has reopened.

Bathrooms:

Bathroom facilities are open.

Sports and Group Activities:

Group sports, group activities, and gatherings are not permitted.
Sports courts are temporarily closed.

Playgrounds:

Playgrounds are open.

Food Service:
Riis Beach Bazaar is open (Bay 9).

Beach:

The beach is accessible for passive recreation.

Sports Fields are temporarily closed and are not available for group play. Basketball courts are open.

Playgrounds:

Playgrounds are open.

Community Garden:

The Miller Field Community Garden is temporarily closed.
Special Use permits for the Miller Field Community Garden are not being issued until further notice.

Fort Wadsworth:

The Overlook is available for relaxation and views of New York Harbor and Battery Weed. Fort Wadsworth is accessible for passive recreation, including biking and walking.

Fort Wadsworth Visitor Center:
Temporarily Closed. All programs and tours are temporarily suspended.

Picnicking:
Barbecuing and group picnicking are not allowed within the Campground area or elsewhere within Fort Wadsworth.

Campground:
The campground is closed for the 2020 season.
Barbecuing and group picnicking are not allowed within the Campground area.

Playgrounds:

Playgrounds are open.

Bathroom facilities:

Porta-johns available next to Visitor Center. Bathrooms currently unavailable.

Sports Fields and Courts:

Sports fields and courts are temporarily closed and are not available for group play.

Fishing Permits:
