When do you have to pay to go to Sandy Hook?
There is a fee charged for beach parking from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking in Fort Hancock is always free.
How much does it cost?
$15 per car per day or $75 for a season pass.
When are lifeguards on duty?
Lifeguards are on duty from 10a.m. to 6p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Where can I fish?
Fishing is allowed on any unguarded beach. Night fishing is allowed by purchasing a night fishing permit for $50 a year.
Why are sections of the beach sometimes roped off?
Piping Plovers and Least Terns are endangered birds that nest on the beach. To protect the nests and young birds, nesting areas are roped off from March 15 to Labor Day. No trespassing is allowed in the enclosures.
Why does the park sometimes close on busy summer weekends?
Sandy Hook has a maximum number of parking spaces, when all are filled, the park closes to new traffic until there are enough spaces to reopen. You can avoid this by visiting the park on weekdays, by arriving before 10am or after 2pm on weekends, or by using mass transit, including summer weekend ferry service.
What are good bird watching locations?
Good locations to see birds include Plum Island, Spermaceti Cove Boardwalk, Horseshoe Cove, and North Pond.
Is Fort Hancock a military installation? Can you visit there?
Fort Hancock was an U.S. Army post from 1895-1974. It is now a National Park that is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. Some historic buildings are open. Please check at the Visitor Center for a schedule.
Does the Lighthouse still work? Can you visit it?
The Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in the U.S. Built in 1764, it is still an active aid to navigation. Tours of the lighthouse are offered April through November. Please check for a schedule.
Is food available and are there restrooms in that park?
Food is available from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day at the beach areas. Restrooms are located at each beach area and in Fort Hancock.
