150th Anniversary Kickoff

Local Historians to be honored by Friends of Wilderness Battlefield

On Saturday, September 14th, the Friends of Wilderness Battlefield will honor Enos Richardson and three others for their remarkable and significant work in preservation.  Anointed with the title of “Captains of Preservation” Orange County’s Frank Walker, Fredericksburg residents John Mitchell and Enos Richardson, and the life- long champion of the Battle of Brandy Station, Clark B. Hall will be recognized at FoWB’s 2013 Annual Auction.

This year’s event will be held from 6 pm to 10 pm at Prince Michel Winery in Madison County. The organizers are excited about the new venue. “We have decided to shake things up a bit and so far folks seem very enthusiastic,” said Zann Nelson, President of FoWB.

The 2013 fundraiser will be a mixer, with an array of delicious dinner worthy hors d’oeuvres prepared by Gentry’s Catering, dancing to the DJ sounds of 40’s swing and 50’s rock and roll, a fabulous offering of Silent and Live auction items and the celebrated Prince Michel wines offered at the cash bar.

“This is our signature fundraising event and of course we have hopes of breaking all records, but it is much more than that,” said Ms. Nelson.  In setting our sights on 2014 and the 150th anniversary of the Battle of the Wilderness, we are reminded of the enormous work, not just of organizations, but of individuals who are dedicated to preservation and stewardship. Without the commitment and sacrifice of men like our four “Captains of Preservation,” the vital monuments to American history embodied in Montpelier, Brandy Station, Ellwood or the Wilderness Battlefield would not survive.”

All are invited to join the celebration on September the 14th as FoWB kicks off the 150thCommemoration of the Wilderness Battle, the Overland Campaign and the beginning of the end of the American Civil War.

If you find even one of our “Captains of Preservation” to be your hero or favorite star, please join us in letting them know just how much they are appreciated.

All proceeds will benefit the Wilderness Battlefield, preserving the history and making that history accessible to all.

An Early Bird Sale on tickets is good through August 31. For more information about sponsorships, tickets, registration, auction offerings, or other details please visit www.fowb .org or call 540-547-2395.
