NPS to Mark Opening New Exhibit at Chancellorsville Visitor Center

Saturday May 17, 9:30 a.m.

The National Park Service invites the public to the formal opening of the new permanent exhibit at the Chancellorsville Visitor Center on Saturday, May 17, at 9:30 a.m.The program will be held at the visitor center located at 9001 Plank Road, Fredericksburg, VA, 22407.

The new exhibition replaces exhibits that were installed during the Centennial of the Civil War, more than 50 years ago.Park staff, members of the community, and staff from Spotsylvania County engaged in a collaborative planning effort, producing a vision that was executed by Formations, Inc., an exhibit fabrication company from Portland, OR.Krister Olmon Design of Los Angeles did the design of the exhibit.

The new exhibit features life-size models, compelling artifacts, and a vivid and detailed diorama of the Chancellor House as it existed in 1862—before war came. The diorama—widely acclaimed as an incredible work of art--was completed by local resident Sam Ganoung.

The exhibit also includes extensive modern photography by Buddy Secor and Larry Stuart.

Park staff will be available to answer questions about the development of the exhibit.

The opening of the exhibit coincides with a major Sesquicentennial Program, “Fighting For Freedom and Firesides: The Rise of the United States Colored Troops,” featuring living historians from the 23d USCT and the 54th Massachusetts.“Fighting for Freedom and Firesides” will take place at Fairvew, tour stop 10 on the Chancellorsville driving tour.
