You will park and then walk back on a cement sidewalk to the building. While the Visitor Center is as tall as a two-story building, the interior is only one-story with a very high ceiling. The shape of the building is a rectangle with different angles along the sides and corners. There is landscaping surrounding it on three sides consisting of oak trees, palmetto trees, small trees shrubs and ornamental grasses including sweet grass. The sidewalk will curve and start ramping up towards the Visitor Center. The walkway/ramp turns to brick at the corner of the Visitor Center which is on your right. At that junction, if you move to the right staying on the cement sidewalk, you will come to an opening on your left which leads to a staircase which goes up to the roof for a view of the surrounding area. Continuing up the brick ramp, there is a metal handrail running along the building on the right side and a low brick wall on your left. Where the handrail ends, you are now at the top of the ramp, and there is another opening to the right in the Visitor Center wall which is a small rectangular alcove with entrances to the women’s restroom on the right and the men’s to the left. While standing at the top of the ramp, you are at a corner of a rectangular brick patio area to your right is the Visitor Center wall. and to you left is a short brick area topped with grey recycled lumber which serves as long bench with no arm or back rests. Halfway down the bench is a small, brown metal sign about Major General Moultrie. The picture of Moultrie and writing is etched in gold and reads “Down the walk on your left is the grave of General William Moultrie. A citizen of Charleston, who on June 28, 1776 led American troops in the defense of the city. From the walls of the unfinished palmetto log fort on Sullivan’s Island he won a remarkable victory over a great British invasion fleet. His achievement gave meaning to the words of the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted within days after the battle, and a grateful people of South Carolina paid him a singular honor in forever linking his name with the fort.” Near the upper left corner of the brick patio is a brown metal flagpole with a US flag. Continuing from the restroom alcove down the right wall is a bottle fill and water fountain station on the right. Continuing beyond this is a locked wooden door which serves as the staff entrance only. The wall turns to the left. Along this wall a set of double doors provide access to the Visitor Center which is surrounded on each side and above by large tinted windows. There is a 3 ½-feet high square pole centered in front of the doors with a button to press to activate the automatic door opener. The doors swing out towards you. Above the glass doors and windows, is a large cement, cream colored, rectangular space with the words “Fort Moultrie Visitor Center” done in black metal lettering. To the left of the words is a large NPS arrowhead. Continuing to the left of the Visitor Center entrance, the wall angles left. There is trashcan with recycling on the right and trash on the left. There is a set of stairs to the left of this taking you down to a cement sidewalk. For the stairs, there are four steps and a landing and then five more steps down. There are metal handrails on either side and two more in the center which divide the stairs into three sections. If you follow the sidewalk to the left, you will return to the parking area; taking it to the right will take you around the Visitor Center to the main road. Crossing the street will take you to the fort itself.<br />On the road side of the Visitor Center, there is a wide, brick ramp going extending from the cement sidewalk to the Visitor Center. To the right of you will be the Visitor Center wall which slopes upwards towards the roof the Visitor Center. On your left is a short brick wall. Where the ramp flattens out, this short, brick wall will become a long bench which is topped with grey recycled planks with no arm or back rests. Beyond the bench area is a landscaped grass lawn with the Fort Moultrie sign angled toward the road. The sign itself rectangular with the long side paralleling the ground. The top of the sign has a dark brown band at the top with “National Park Service. U.S. Department of the Interior” Below this the remainder of the sign is light brown with “Fort Moultrie Visitor Center. Fort Sumter National Monument.”. All writing is in white. The sign itself is flanked on each side by a brick column. A National Park Service arrowhead is on the left side column. The tall brick wall of the Visitor Center on the right side of the ramp angles across with tinted glass windows and another set of double doors with access into the Visitor Center. There is a 3 ½-feet high square pole centered in front of the doors with a button to press to activate the automatic door opener. When entering the park, there are two walkways made of bluestone. To the right of the park entrance is the cement sign with metallic lettering. In the middle is black, metal gate. Centered on the gate are the words Liberty Square with a National Park Service arrowhead. On the left, is an entrance sign for the South Carolina Aquarium. Follow either bluestone walkway down to the Septima Clark water fountain. Along the way is a large open green space to your left and two shade shelters made of brick on the right. There are banners featuring iconic scenes and people associated with Fort Sumter hanging on the brick pillars of the shade shelters. The park is landscaped near the shade shelters and buildings with a variety of trees like magnolias and live oaks, as well as ornamental bushes and grasses. There are numerous metal trashcans and benches scattered throughout the park. At the end of the bluestone walkway there is a tall metal flagpole. The base of the flagpole is surrounded by a half-circle fountain with water which cascaded down from the top of the fountain into the pool of water below. No one is allowed to go into the fountain. On the opposite side of the fountain are three bronze signs on Septima Poinsette Clark, a Civil Rights leader, to whom the water fountain is dedicated. Beyond the fountain, the South Carolina Aquarium, a four-story, building with lots of windows is to your left. On the right is the Liberty Square Visitor Center. The building is constructed with red brick, approximately 50-feet high at its tallest, and in the shape of a long rectangle with the short sides facing the park and the water of Charleston Harbor. A long, cement staircase with metal handrails on each side and one in the middle lead up to the landing and entrance to the Visitor Center. On the wall above the stairs and landing is a National Park Service arrowhead with the words “Fort Sumter Visitor Center” to the right in gold metallic lettering. On the landing, there is an elevator to your right. In the center is a glass turnstile door to the left and a single glass door to the right. A button to the right of the single door activates the automatic door opener. On left side beyond the turnstile door, is a glass window which opens for purchasing tickets for the concession-ferry to Fort Sumter. A large video screen to the left of the ticket window displays information about the ferry boats. Back on the ground level, the building is open underneath with brick columns and archways to mimic the cannon casemates at Fort Sumter. On the end closest to the park and under the stairs is an entry point for the elevator. In the center space under the building on the left side are wooden benches with no arm or back rests and cement legs. The benches are positioned to face a brick wall with a video monitor mounted to run a variety of short videos about the park. To the right of this and still under the building are black stations connected with nylon ropes to create queuing lines for the ferry boat. There is another entry way from the right side of the building to this area nearby. Outside of the left wall is a long ramp which zigzags up to the Visitor Center level of the building. A staircase at the end of the building on the Charleston Harbor side merges into the ramps. A large rectangular square area is available outside of the backdoors into to the building for waiting for the ferry or looking at the sites around Charleston Harbor. The backdoors have a turnstile door on the right and a single glass door on the left. The single door is activated by a button on the left of the door. To the right of the doors, is a bottle fill and water fountain station. There are several interpretive signs about the nearby attractions as well as several benches.
