NPS/ B.Marcum What is Carolina Day?Carolina Day is the annual commemoration of the Battle of Sullivan's Island that occurred on June 28, 1776. This battle occurred when British forces attempted to seize the strategic fort on Sullivan’s Island. Patriot defenders successfully repelled the attack despite being outnumbered and under heavy fire. The battle marked the first major victory over the Royal Navy for patriot forces, boosting moral and demonstrating the ability to repel British attacks early in the Revolutionary War. NPS Getting Here and Getting AroundEvent parking on Sullivan's Island is extremely limited. Visitors are encouraged to seek alternative transportation options.
NPS Image The information tent, represented by the small white circle with an '?' inside, is available for visitors who have questions or need more information. The orange area (location 4) is the living history area. Here, visitors can view various living history demonstrations including indigo dyeing, colonial dancing, brick making, knot tying, colonial cooking and more. The yellow area (location 5) is the history row area. Here, visitors can visit a variety of informational and interactive activity tents. Visitors can learn to play cricket, colonial games, learn about Revolutionary War uniforms and equipment, the construction of the palmetto log fort, the timeline of the battle of Sullivan's Island and much more. The purple area (location 2) is the artillery range. In this area, historic weapons demonstrations with both muskets and cannon will be taking place throughout the day. Please see the schedule above for times for those demonstrations. The blue-purple area (location 6) is the food area. Located in this area will be several food trucks, a food tent and a water bottle filling station. The dark gray area (location 7) is a temporary public parking location. There will be no beach access from Fort Moultrie during the weekend of the event. The lighter gray area (location 9) is the accessible parking lot and ride share pick up location. The light blue area (location 1) is Fort Moultrie. Visitors are still welcome to visit the fort and explore its' history during the event. The small gray area (location 8) is the Visitor Center. The building will be open from 9 am to 4:30 pm during the event. A short film about the Battle of Sullivan's Island will be available to view in the theater. The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 27 & 28 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
The event is free and tickets are not needed.
There is limited parking on Sullivan’s Island and heavy traffic is likely. We highly recommend that visitors take the free shuttle service from Lucy Beckham High School (1560 Mathis Ferry Rd) in Mt. Pleasant or Mt. Pleasant Town Hall (100 Ann Edwards Ln). Shuttle services will run about every 20-minutes. See the above map for routes.
Food and beverages can be brought to the event, but alcohol is prohibited. There will also be several food trucks on site.
Restrooms can be found in front of the park visitor center and there will be additional bathrooms and handwashing stations located at various places near the event.
The event will be outdoors, and various activities will take place underneath tents.
Many of the activities will run along a sidewalk and accessibility mats will be included where possible. There may be some areas with limited accessibility.
There are no age restrictions. Events and activities are open to visitors of all ages and are family friendly.

Carolina Day is an annual event held on the weekend closest to June 28 to celebrate the patriot victory over the British at the battle of Sullivan’s Island. This was the patriots' first major victory over the Royal Navy and delayed the capture of Charleston for four years.
