August 25, 2012 marks the 96th birthday of the National Park Service and Fort Smith NHS is celebrating!
A line-up of the day's activities include:
11:00 am (park grounds):
Live cannon fire demonstration and interpretive talk on the historic use of cannons in battle.
11:30 am & 2:00 pm (visitor center classroom):
Cattle Trails, Pathways to the Myth of the American Cowboy
Guest lecturer Lynn Shackelford will be speaking about four major cattle trails that would have affected Fort Smith: the Shawnee Trail; the Chisholm Trail; the Western Trail; and the Goodnight-Loving Trail.
All day (park wide):
A new activity booklet that gets families outdoors to explore the park and earn Junior Ranger badges at the same time.
Civil War Trading Cards
For the Civil War buff, August 25th will be the official launch date of the park's new Civil War trading card series. The park is proud to launch four new cards as part of the National Park Service Civil War to Civil Rights trading card program. Card topics include highlights in the fort's Civil War history. Each card can be obtained by completing its own activity sheet. Activity sheets can be obtained at the visitor center information desk.
