Fort Smith National Historic Site and the Eastern National Book Store will host a book signing and presentation by author Billy D. Higgins on Saturday, September 11at 11:00 a.m. at the park's visitors center. The presentation is free and open to the public. Higgins will be on hand to sign his recent book "Fort Smith: Vanguard of Western Frontier History" and his earlier book "A Stranger and a Sojourner: Peter Caulder: Free Black Frontiersman in Antebellum Arkansas." Each of these books is available for sale at the Eastern National Bookstore. At twelve 12:00 p.m. a presentation will be given by Professor Higgins on the Bad Tempered Buffalo Affair, an exciting encounter between the soldiers at Fort Smith and the Osage Indians that is discussed in both of his books.
The book "Fort Smith: Vanguard of Western Frontier History" covers the history of the Fort Smith National Historic Site from the early conflicts between the Osage and Cherokee to the time that the site became a National Park. Higgins other book, "A Stranger and a Sojourner: Peter Caulder: Free Black Frontiersman in Antebellum Arkansas" is about the life of a black man who was a soldier in Fort Smith's Rifle Regiment that established the post in 1817.
Fort Smith National Historic Site is located in downtown Fort Smith along the Arkansas River. To access the parking lot from Garrison or Rogers Avenue, turn south on 4th Street and right on Garland Avenue.
