George Washington Art Contest

2018 Rules, Deadlines, Awards, and General information

RULES

  1. Students are limited to one entry.
  2. The art must be the creation of the 4th or 5th grade student.
  3. All entries must show an event in the life of George Washington. There are two categories "The Life of Washington" and “Washington in the French and Indian War.” Please specify the category in which you wish to compete on the entry form. If no category is specified, the Fort Necessity National Battlefield staff will select a category based upon the subject of the art.
  4. Winners will be selected on the basis of originality, artistic merit, and historical accuracy.
  5. Entries must be on paper no larger than 9" x 12".
  6. Entries must be no thicker than one-quarter inch and must be able to be hung on the wall.
  7. Any medium may be used (pen and ink, crayon, paint, collage, etc.).
  8. The art should not to be framed.
  9. Students must not write their name on the front of the art.
  10. Each picture must be accompanied by a completed entry form taped to the back of the entry. It is not necessary to use the provided entry form. A sheet of paper with the information required on the entry form will be accepted.
  11. There are two types of entry forms: a classroom entry form should be used by teachers submitting their students’ art. Individuals should use the individual student entry form.
    1. The classroom entry form requires the following information: the student’s name, the student’s grade, the category the student is entering, the teacher’s name, the school’s name and address, the teacher’s email address and the teacher’s or school’s phone number.
    2. The individual entry form requires the following information: the student’s name, the student’s grade, the category the student is entering, The name of the school the student attends, the name of a parent/guardian’s, the email address of the parent/guardian’s and the parent/guardian’s phone number.
  12. Only mailed or hand-delivered entries will be accepted.
  13. All entries become the property of Fort Necessity National Battlefield.
  14. The judges’ decisions are final.
  15. Entries that violate these rules will be disqualified.

DEADLINES

  1. The entries must be received by the 5:00 pm on Thursday, February 8, 2018. The entries may be hand-delivered to Fort Necessity National Battlefield visitor center or may be mailed. Mailed entries should be addressed to Art Contest, Fort Necessity National Battlefield, 1 Washington Parkway, Farmington, PA 15437.
  2. After the judging, winners will be notified via their teachers. The staff will use the emails and phone numbers provided on the entry form to contact the teachers.
  3. Prizes will be awarded at two ceremonies on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Fort Necessity National Battlefield Visitor Center. The 4th grade awards will be held at 1:00 PM and the 5th grade awards will be held at 2:30 PM.
  4. Winners need not be present at the awards ceremony to win.
  5. All winning pictures will be displayed in the Fort Necessity Visitor Center from Saturday, February 24 through Saturday March 3, 2018.

  1. All winners and prizes are awarded at both the 4th and 5th grade level. Fourth and 5th grade student do not compete against each other.
  2. “Life of Washington” Category

1st Place – $50 gift certificate to the Eastern National Bookstore at Fort Necessity

2nd Place —$25 gift certificate to the Eastern National Bookstore at Fort Necessity

3rd Place — George Washington Bronze Medallion

Honorable Mention —Fort Necessity Patch

The judges may award more than one Honorable Mention.

  1. “Washington in the French and Indian War” Category

1st Place — $50 gift certificate to the Eastern National Bookstore at Fort Necessity

2nd Place —$25 gift certificate to the Eastern National Bookstore at Fort Necessity

3rd Place — George Washington Bronze Medallion

Honorable Mention —Fort Necessity Patch

The judges may award more than one Honorable Mention.

  1. Special Merit

All the entries will be considered for the special merit awards.

These awards are giving to students who have not won one of the awards in the “Life of Washington” or the “Washington in the French and Indian War” categories.

  1. School 1st Place Award

Each school that submits at least 15 entries at the 4th grade level or 15 entries at the 5th grade level will have a School 1st Place Award winner. If the school has 15 entries at both the 4th and the 5th grade level, School 1st Place Awards will be selected at both grade levels.

School 1st Place Award — Fort Necessity Pin

The School 1st Place Award may go to a student who has already won another award.

  1. If the gift certificates are not redeemed before they expire, the staff at Fort Necessity National Battlefield will select some items as the prize and mail it to the winner at his or her school.

  1. Children of National Park Service families may enter, but are not eligible to win prizes.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • The “Washington in the French and Indian War” category will cover events from 1753 – 1758 and relate to historical incidents from that time period. All other art should go into the “Life of Washington” category.
  • Traced art will not be considered to be creative or to showing artistic merit and will not win.
  • Memorials to George Washington that do not also depict an event in Washington’s life, will not be considered to meet the requirement of depicting an event in his life.
  • Students are encouraged to put the title of their picture on the front.
  • Resources for the teacher and the students can be found Fort Necessity’s Art Contest Resource page.

o This includes a timeline of George Washington’s life, and a timeline of Washington’s activities during the French and Indian War and links to many websites relating to George Washington.

  • The staff at Fort Necessity National Battlefield may opt to return the students’ art, however the National Park Service still retains the right to use images of the art on their website and in their publications.
