 Fort Larned Comes to Life

Plan a visit to Fort Larned National Historic Site, during Memorial weekend.  This is a great opportunity for families because there is no admission fee. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of the 1860's as Fort Larned comes alive bustling with over 70 volunteers through the weekend. View living history programs, visit with living historians that will be portraying; soldiers, blacksmith, cooks, ladies of the post, clerks and others as Fort Larned comes to life. Bring a brown bag lunch and enjoy the picnic area or take a spring season walk along the history/nature trail through the Pawnee River woodlands and restored prairie. In addition to visiting Fort Larned, have the kids become a Junior Ranger and earn a free Junior Ranger Badge.   View a special weapons exhibit that will be on display in the Commanding Officers' quarters.  Living history programs will be presented all three days from 9:00 a.m. and ending at 4:30 with a retreat ceremony with firing of the post howitzer. Demonstration will be at 11 a.m. 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. daily.

1:00 p.m.  "Life on Officer's Row"

2:00 p.m. "Army Weapons Demonstration" firing artillery and small arms

3:00 p.m. "Life in Garrison" life of the soldier from foods to punishments

4:30 p.m. "Retreat Program"


Fort Larned National Historic Site is located six miles west of Larned on Kansas Highway 156.
