Memorial Day Weekend Events at Fort Donelson National Battlefield
Dover, Tennessee—Services to honor American veterans will highlight the activities of Fort Donelson National Battlefield, May 29-31, 2010. The national cemetery will be the site of two memorial services, hosted by the National Park Service, veteran’s organizations, and local civic and scout groups. The weekend events are held in conjunction with the Stewart County Eaglefest Celebration.
Park volunteers will conduct Eagle Programs at 1:00 & 2:00 pm on March 29. These programs are free. Scout groups and families are welcomed. No reservations are required.
On May 30, a Luminary Ceremony will be held at the Fort Donelson National Cemetery. Over 2,000 candles will be lit, to honor the memory of veterans who are buried at the site. Park staff and volunteers will provide guided tours. The event begins at 8:00 pm and concludes at 9:00 pm. A shuttle service to the ceremony will begin at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, located on Church Street in Dover.
On Monday, May 31, the Stewart County Veterans Service Organization and VFW #4730 will host the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the cemetery at 1pm. The featured speaker will be Alvin L. Harris, Sr., Senior vice Commander, District 6, Post 4730.
