Dover, Tennessee – Fort Donelson National Battlefield re-opened to visitors today.Visitors may access public areas and roads immediately while facilities and other public services are brought back online.Fort Donelson National Battlefield has been closed since October 1, 2013 due to the lapse in Congressional appropriations.
"We are excited and happy to be back at work and warmly welcome visitors to Fort Donelson National Battlefield," said Superintendent Brian McCutchen. "Autumn is a particularly special season to enjoy all that Fort Donelson has to offer."
As of Thursday morning, October 17, the national park has fully reopened its primary Fort Donelson battlefield units located in Stewart County, Tennessee, and the Fort Heiman unit, located in Calloway County, Kentucky.The Fort Donelson visitor center and Dover Hotel are open daily from 8:00AM to 4:30 PM, and park grounds are presently open from 8:00am till 6:00pm daily.
The park's monthly book club meetings are still scheduled. On Sunday, October 20, the Murray, Kentucky, group will meet at 3:00, at the Calloway County Public Library, discussing Shelby Foote's The Civil War, volume 2. The Dover group will meet on Thursday, October 24, 6:00, at the park's visitor center to continue discussing William Cooper's Jefferson Davis, American. Other programs affected by the shutdown will be rescheduled at a later date.
