Born in Puerto Rico, Waleska Martinez, 37, of Jersey City, New Jersey, was the "backbone of the family," according to her father. With a business and computer science degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Martinez came to the States in 1987 to advance her career, but maintained close ties to her family. In thirteen years with the U.S. Census Bureau she rose from Clerk to Automation Specialist for the New York Region. On September 11, Martinez was traveling with co-worker Marion Britton to attend a conference in San Francisco. Martinez loved to cook Italian and Spanish foods for friends and family, played tennis and softball, and enjoyed concerts and dancing. She is survived by her parents, a brother, and a sister.
