Introduction (Unit 1) - About Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument was established in 1969 to preserve the 34-million-year-old fossils of the Florissant Formation and provide the public with a unique glimpse into the past. The Monument is located south of Florissant, Colorado, which is 35 miles west of Colorado Springs on US Highway 24.

The Monument is home to a diverse array of wildlife and plants, some of which are distant relatives of the organisms preserved in the Florissant lake shales.
