The Friends of Fire Island National Seashore (FFINS), in conjunction with the Nature and Wildlife Photographers of Long Island (NWPLI), are sponsoring a South Shore-themed photography exhibition and fundraiser at the Patchogue-Watch Hill Ferry Terminal, 150 West Avenue, in Patchogue, New York. An opening reception for the 2012 "Essence of Fire Island" Photography Exhibition will be held on Thursday, June 28, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. The exhibit then remains open on weekends, from noon to 5:00 p.m., through August 5.
One of Fire Island National Seashore's official park partners, FFINS conducts its "Essence of Fire Island" photography exhibition as a fundraiser. "We depend on collaborative projects like this one," stated Dr. Dave Hensen, president of FFINS, "to help us raise the money we need for additional programs, like orientation tours to the Seashore." FFINS also provides support for and promotion of programs at the Seashore. This year, members of NWPLI were invited to participate in the themed show, with appropriate works selected for display. A portion of the sale of photographs on display will go to the FFINS.
Fourteen photographers from the NWPLI are participating in this year's "Essence of Fire Island." Their images include views of the Great South Bay as well as those taken on Fire Island. Members of the NWPLI are all professional, semi-professional or amateur photographers who share a love for nature and an eye for detail. Many of the participating photographers will be available at the opening reception on Thursday evening, June 28, to meet and greet the public, and to share some of their techniques for catching the essence of Fire Island's nature and wildlife.
Both this photography exhibit and the annual art show at the Fire island Lighthouse (on display through July 15) provide inspiration to explore Fire Island's various barrier island habitats and record your own observations of natural history and wildlife.
Fire Island National Seashore's 2012 Wildlife Photo Contest is open through August 31.
