Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar designated four water trails as new historic components of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. The designation recognizes the significance of four connecting rivers -- the Susquehanna, Chester, Upper James, and Upper Nanticoke -- to the history, cultural heritage, and natural resources of the trail. Designation enables NPS to work closely with state and local agencies and other partners to provide technical and financial assistance, resource management, facility enhancement, interpretive trail route marking and promotion along the connecting trails.

Government and tribal leaders, conservation partners, and interested citizens joined Secretary Salazar and NPS Director Jon Jarvis in a signing ceremony on May 16, 2012 at Sandy Point State Park. https://www.nps.gov/cajo/learn/news/secretary-salazar-designates-connecting-components.htm
