Between May of 1933 and March of 1942, 12 CCC camps in nine different locations opened in what was to become Shenandoah National Park. These camps were home to 200 boys each at a time. When the first boys arrived, their new homes were Army tents. One of their first tasks was to build themselves more permanent structues.

By 1934 the Army had developed pre-fabricated buildings that were shipped to each new site and assembled. But because Shenandoah was one of the first places to host CCC Camps, only two of the camps were pre-fabricated; the rest were unique.
