Matilda is your grandmother and she's everything a grandmother should be—always ready with a hug, ready to defend you in any situation, and before these hard times, she always had a few extra coins for some penny candy at the General Store. She and your grandfather have lived in this house forever (or so it seems) and there used to be a garden that yielded the best vegetables: tomatoes, potatoes, sweet corn. Grandma can't seem to get it off her mind—this drought that has dried up the soil and the wind that carried it away. Cooking used to be her pastime—the best pies you ever tasted. She still has a ready smile when you come in the house, but she doesn't fool you—you can see the worry in her eyes.
