Portrait of First Signing of Emancipation Proclamation

Five days later Lincoln used his victory as this opportunity to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. The final Proclamation was signed and took effect on January 1, 1863.

Lincoln took special pains to write a steady signature so that no one would think that he was not resolved in issuing the document.
