This is a sample of stone implements recovered on the lower Colorado River Survey in 1951. They include hammerstones and a pestle. Pestles were used to crush food and medicines. Hammerstones were used to strike flakes from a core to form tools.

Ground Breaking Ceremony

Boulder City, "The City that Built Hoover Dam," was a great stopping point on the way to or from the park. In a 1953 ceremony, the park broke ground for a new administration building on the corner of Wyoming and Nevada Highway that served as headquarters and also a place for visitors to get information.

Steam Powered Tractor

In the late 1700s, Spaniards searched for gold along the Colorado River. They named their camp "Eldorado" in honor of their quest for the legendary city of gold. This steam powered tractor was used in later mining operations in Eldorado Canyon.

St. Thomas postmaster Leland Whitmore canceled the mail with this "last day cover" on June 11, 1938, one day before the town disappeared under the water of Lake Mead. Last day covers mark a stamp's last day of use and are valuable to collectors.

As the only marina on Lake Mead in Arizona, Temple Bar offered a quieter, less crowded place to recreate. It had a dock, store and other amenities. Visitors could stay in small rustic cabins while fishing and enjoying the sandy, secluded coves of the area.

Sediment Deposit

This sediment deposit in Lake Mead opposite Pierce Ferry is 275 feet deep and some 45 miles in length. Note numerous sunken pockets partially filled with water. Methane gas is bubbling out of the water in most of these pockets.
