  • People have lived in the Yosemite region for 8,000 years. Starting in the late 1790s, the lives of Yosemite Indians began to change dramatically as the first influences of non-Indians in California were felt.
  • In 1833, Joseph Walker and a party of fur trappers crossed the Sierra Nevada through a portion of what is now Yosemite National Park. Judging from their later writings, they may have seen Yosemite Valley from the north rim. They also entered either the Merced or Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias.
