Event Time:5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
The Upper Merced River Watershed Council presents a special showing of the Ken Burns’ documentary, Yosemite: A Gathering of Spirit, at 5:30 pm on Thursday March 20th. We are re-instating our speaker series in which we bring experts to talk about issues which affect the watershed. The Merced River, which flows through the park, connects us all to the history of Yosemite.
Yosemite has inspired generations of people for thousands of years. On June 30, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant Act, establishing Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove as the first protected wild land for all time. In addition, this grant marked the first California State Park.
Join us to watch Ken Burns’ documentary on the Yosemite Grant Act, A Gathering of Spirit. Visionary Americans like Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, and Galen Clark understood that the wonders of the American wilderness are not only our inheritance, but our responsibility. Now, 150 years later, the promise of the Yosemite Grant endures as this beloved national park opens its arms to over 4 million people annually who marvel at the awe-inspiring beauty and gain a new understanding of the importance of preserving our wild lands.
