El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro REAP Workshop

Phase 2 Development

Workshop participants agreed, as part of this strategy development, that NPS Archeology and Ethnography will implement the Rapid Ethnographic Assessment Procedures at both ends of the United States portion of the Trail, rather than in areas along the whole Trail. To plan for this implementation NPS A&E staff propose to conduct two additional, shorter, workshops. One will be held in early or mid summer in the northern part of the trail. The other will be held in late autumn/early winter at the southern part of the trail.

This proposal is dictated by two factors. The first is the anticipated limitation of funds. The second follows from the operational definition of stakeholder and the sampling design: there is greatest community interest in conducting the survey at the extreme northern end, at San Juan Pueblo, and at the southern end, along the U.S. - Mexico border. Despite travel restrictions, NPS hopes for continued involvement of the Republic of Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), NPS travel restrictions makes their role uncertain.

Northern Phase 2

The northern Phase 2 will be conducted in mid summer 2004, at the northern end of the trail, around the San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico.

Who will be involved

The National Park Service's El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro NHT, Intermountain Region, Spanish Colonial Research Center (Albuquerque), and the International Conservation Programs Office will be involved. Other Federal officials will include representatives from the Bureau of Land Management and an ethnographer from the NPS Intermountain Region.

Community officials will include leaders from the San Juan Pueblo, students from the Pueblo community, and representatives from the Camino Consortium and Mimbres Paquimé. As appropriate, the Consortium will identify research team members for participation.

Objectives:

Southern Phase 2

The southern Phase 2 will be conducted in the autumn, at the southern end of the trail in the United States, at El Paso, Texas. The workshop location will be split between the Ysleta Del Sur/El Paso and Las Cruces areas. The southern phase will make use of what was discovered in the northern phase. For example, kinds of organizations that may be approached may apply (or not apply) in different locations.

Who will be involved

The National Park Service's El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro NHT, Intermountain Region, and the International Conservation Programs Office will be involved. Also involved will be officials from the Bureau of Land Management

Included in the research teams will be anthropology faculty and students from New Mexico State University and University of Texas at El Paso, and representatives identified from Ysleta Del Sur. UTEP and New Mexico State University students all reside in the respective El Paso and Las Cruces areas.
