The pool at El Morro collects snowmelt and rain runoff from the top of the cuesta. Prior to the 1900s, visitors could walk or ride their horses around the pool's sandy perimeter. Today, cattails, native grasses, and wildflowers grow along its shore. Depending on yearly rainfall, the pool holds an average of about 200,000 gallons of water.
