Cuyahoga Valley National Park Volunteer Program Building a Community of Park Stewards

Brecksville, Ohio - Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) is seeking park enthusiasts to help visitors enjoy their visit and find a meaningful connection to the park's resources. Park Ambassador volunteers have conversations and present scripted talks as a costumed interpreter/historian, artisan, on Paw Patrol (volunteer with your dog), or at wildlife viewing spots, community events, Trail Mix shops, or at the Winter Sports Center.

People interested in volunteering with one of the Park Ambassador volunteer groups are invited to an orientation at Happy Days Lodge, on Saturday, February 2, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., or Wednesday, February 6, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Attendance at either of these orientations is required for new volunteers. Happy Days Lodge is located at 500 West Streetsboro Road in Peninsula, Ohio, 44264.

Various types of Park Ambassador volunteer opportunities include:

Canal Lock Interpreters: Present scripted speech and have conversations with visitors about the historic operation of the canal and its many lift locks, life for canal boat families, historic games, and period clothing. Volunteers wear 19th century-style clothing (provided).

Roving Historians & Artisans: Talk with visitors about the canal era or engage visitors through a variety of newly prepared artisan activities that are both stimulating and educational.

Paw Patrol: Provide an opportunity for park visitors to learn more about CVNP and the opportunities that canine companions can have along the trails. Paw Patrol helps provide a unique visitor experience and an opportunity to make contact with a well-behaved and trained canine volunteer and its owner.

Wildlife Watchers: Talk with visitors about local wildlife at various park locations, and set up viewing scopes when helpful. Topics include bald eagles, bats, beavers, and other wildlife.

Park Promoters: Promote CVNP and the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park at on-site and off-site special events, including Happy Days Lodge and Blossom Music Center.

Trail Mix Shop Greeter: Greet customers and provide park information/orientation at the Peninsula and/or Boston locations.

Winter Sports Center Assistant: Assist visitors in selecting skis or snowshoes, handling the cash register, and with park information/orientation. We are seeking Winter Sports Center volunteers for the 2013/2014 season.

Volunteers must have the ability to start conversation and advocate for the park and park partners, have strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and be comfortable with public speaking. Individuals must be able to stand for extended periods of time and have some availability on weekends and holidays, and preferably commit two to eight hours per month. Interpretation, First Aid/CPR, and position-specific training is provided.

Contact the volunteer office at volunteer@forcvnp.org or 330-657-2299 for more information regarding these volunteer opportunities or to sign up for the Park Ambassador Orientation.
