Spend Winter Break With Your Family in Your National Park

Brecksville, Ohio – School’s out! Bring your kids over to Cuyahoga Valley National Park for fun-filled winter sports and activities. Create a new family tradition and experience the beauty and benefit of nature in winter. Boston Store Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. If there is at least four inches of snow, you can rent snowshoes for a fun day walking on top of the snow and getting exercise at the same time. Fee: $5 (full day rental). Boston Store is the place to visit with park staff and pick up park literature and trail maps. Kids will enjoy the park-themed merchandise for sale.

After a heavy snow,head on over to the Winter Sports Center, located within Kendall Lake Shelter to rent cross-country skis and snowshoes. During winter break, the center is open Saturdays and Sundays through December 22 and daily December 26 through 31. It may be open additional days during heavy snowfall. 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. There must be at least four inches of snow for snowshoe rental and six inches of snow for cross-country ski rental. Fees: snowshoe rental $5 (full day); ski rental $15 (full day) and $7.50 (3 hours).

Want to learn to cross-country ski? Classes are led by Park Ranger/Certified Ski Instructor Paul Motts. In addition to the scheduled workshop below, there may be additional classes offered when there are favorable skiing conditions of at least 6 inches of snow. To register call 330-657-2752.

Scheduled Cross-Country Ski Workshops:
Saturday, December 28
Beginning Cross-Country Ski Workshop
Learn the basics of cross-country skiing at the beginning workshop, held with or without snow. Free ski time will follow approximately 2 hours of instruction. Dress for the weather. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment; a limited supply will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Fee: $10 with own equipment, $15 with 3-hour rental. Kendall Lake Shelter, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Remember how fun it is to go sledding? All ages can enjoy this winter activity at the Kendall Hills. Separate areas are designated for sleds and toboggans. Bring your own equipment!

Trek on over to the park for some great family hikes along our recommended trails. Visit www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/outdooractivities.htm to help plan your visit. Be sure to dress children in layers, bring along water and a snack, choose a hike that is appropriate for your child’s age, take frequent breaks, and take time to talk with children and encourage them to explore things along the trail. Most importantly, have fun!

Boston Store Visitor Center is located at 1550 Boston Mills Road, east of Riverview Road, Peninsula 44264.

Kendall Lake Shelter/ Winter Sports Center is located on Truxell/ Kendall Park Road, 2 miles west of Akron Cleveland Road, Peninsula 44264.

Kendall Hills is located on Quick Road in Peninsula, about one mile east of Akron Peninsula Road, Peninsula 44264. Parking is located at nearby Pine Hollow, Crow Foot Gully, and Little Meadow parking lots.
