FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Monday, May 9, 2011
Peninsula, Ohio – Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) is pleased to report the canned food drive held April 16 & 17, 2011 aboard the train to benefit both the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and the Cleveland Foodbank was a great success. Over 2000 pounds of canned food items were donated between the two entities.
Over 1,200 passengers climbed aboard between Akron Northside Station and Canal Visitor Center in Valley View that weekend.
"The fantastic turn out just shows the community spirit of this area, and how when times are tough, they are willing to step up and help," commented Steve Wait, President and CEO of CVSR.
CVSR has decided to help again – this time to aid the area’s four-legged friends with a drive to benefit the Cleveland Animal Protective League and PAWSIBILITIES -- The Humane Society of Greater Akron.
On May 14 & 15, 2011, area residents can climb aboard CVSR and take a Spring Fever excursion for just $5 and an item from the two agencies’ wish list, which includes supplies such as Science Diet Small Bites dog food, Science Diet Cat and Kitten Chow, unused flea/heartworm meds, dog biscuits, 6 foot nylon leashes, bedding, latex gloves, paper towels, heavy duty trash bags, and cleaning products. All items can be viewed at either www.summithumane.org or www.clevelandapl.org.
Spring Fever excursions currently being offered include The National Park Scenic, a 3-hour round trip allowing riders the opportunity to see the beauty of Cuyahoga Valley National Park unthawing from winter. Narration on the historical significance of the area and the 33,000 acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park will be included each trip through Voices of the Valley audio tour. Riders can choose to enjoy a layover in the Village of Peninsula or at the Canal Visitor Center.
Trains depart from Canal Visitor Center, located at 7104 Canal Rd., Valley View at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and from the Akron Northside Station, located at 27 Ridge Street in Akron, at 11:35 a.m. No reservations are necessary. Donated items will be collected and tickets sold at the stations.
CVSR is a private sector, not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) volunteer supported organization operating in partnership with Cuyahoga Valley National Park and is dedicated to the preservation of passenger rail transportation in Cuyahoga Valley and the historic Ohio & Erie Canalway. CVSR is celebrating its 39th year of excursion rail service.
Tickets for all excursions and special events, including A Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine coming to CVSR May 21, 22, 27, 28 & 29, 2011, can be purchased at www.CVSR.com.
