Peninsula, Ohio – Countryside Conservancy has a long history of dedicated volunteers and forward thinking board members, and two recent nominations for sustainability awards continues that tradition.

Karen Powell, long time volunteer at Countryside Farmers’ Markets and on Countryside Initiative Farms, was recently nominated for Entrepreneurs for Sustainability’s (E4S) Champion of Sustainability Award. Karen was nominated for her role in helping to organize the first annual Farm ‘N Barn Bike Tour that showcased the Countryside Initiative Farms in August. Karen’s enthusiasm for the event and her critical role working with other key organizers – including Countryside staff as well as National Park Service employees - cemented its success.

Board member Jeff Heinen was also nominated for an E4S Champion of Sustainability Award for the work he has done in sourcing locally produced foods for the Heinen’s grocery stores. Making local foods convenient and accessible is an important step in ensuring continued and convenient access for consumers as well as prosperity for our region’s farmers.

We hope you will join us in congratulating Karen and Jeff for their important and lasting contributions to our organization, local farmers, and our region as a whole.

Since 1999, the Countryside Conservancy has supported community-based food systems throughout Northeast Ohio. This unique non-profit organization helps re-establish farms in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and runs farmers markets at Howe Meadow, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, and Old Trail School. Other programs help up-and-coming farmers find land, connect local growers to chefs and consumers, and educate citizens about the importance of local food systems.
